Character Analysis: Sokka

Avatar: The Last Airbender
As you all know, Jackson Rathbone was cast as Sokka in M. Night's The Last Airbender which is based off of the Nickelodeon television series Avatar: The Last Airbender (they dropped the avatar part so not to be confused with the other movie Avatar, which is completely unrelated.

You've seen Jackson play the leading man in ABC Family's Beautiful People. He's played the pothead in Senior Skip Day and even the innocent one in two horror movies: Pray for Morning and Hurt. He's played the Civil War veteran and immortal Jasper Hale in The Twilight Saga movies, the naive victim in Dread, and if you have seen the previews and synopsis for Girlfriend, he plays the bad-boy. So who is Sokka?

Sokka is a gawky big brother of Katara, the remaining water-bender of the southern water tribe. In the series characters are able to use the elements (earth, wind, fire, and water) to their own advantage. The world is split between four nations to specify the different elements: Fire Nation, Northern Water Tribe, Southern Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom. Aang, the last airbender, is also the Avatar and the purpose of this movie is his journey to master all four elements in order to stop the growing Fire Nation. Think of the Fire Nation like Germany in pre World War II times. The Fire Nation wants to take over the other nations for power, to take over the world, etc.

Katara and Sokka stumble upon the avatar in an iceberg. The Avatar is the last hope of the world, he is the only one who will be able to defeat the fire nation successfully. The avatar had disappeared for a century before Sokka and Katara found him frozen in the ice berg (as seen in the trailer. haven't seen the trailer? go back to my blog and scroll down. I've posted it).

Unlike his sister Katara, Sokka is unable to bend anything. Instead, he carries around a boomerang. Sounds lame? It's not. This guy throws a mean boomerang, constantly getting the gang out of trouble with the flick of his wrist. He is the protective big brother and only male remaining in the Southern Water Tribe. His father is off in the war against the Fire Nation; he was too young to follow in his father's footsteps. He teaches the younger boys how to fight against the Fire Nation is they ever invade their tribe. Although not exactly skilled, his character is naively protective and stubborn.

He is also a sarcastic jokester. If you love sarcasm, you'll love this character. He is a pessimist, yes, but he always has you laughing.

In this movie, if it sticks to the television series which is not likely, Sokka is a ladies' man. As seen in the trailer, Sokka is involved with Princess Yue, a moon spirit who *spoiler alert* sacrifices herself for the water tribe. *end of spoiler* He is also taught how to be a true warrior by Suki, a Kyoshi warrior. *spoiler alert* If the movies continue, Sokka will reunite with Suki and they form a relationship. *end of spoiler*

Despite the other characters interested in "The Sokka", he is not a suave guy. Picture a nerdy guy whose voice always cracks when he gets nervous, he trips over his words (and himself), and is the least bit romantic. That is Sokka. This could also be Jackson in a way. I don't picture him being suave, just dreamy. :)

Anyway, Sokka is a determined character who is skeptical of Aang in the beginning, focusing on his promise to his father: to protect Katara. He is the epitome of protective big brother (for you Twilight fans, think of Emmett).

Any more questions? Ask.
*spoiler*
"My first girlfriend turned into the moon." -Sokka
"That's rough, buddy." -Zuko

lol Totally. :D
I laughed when I read your take on Sokka's boomerang, especially since it's true. n_n
And I'm really hoping we're going to see Jackson with a sword too. (Even though that mainly happens in the third book/movie...)

@Rachel Faith, right! there's also the learning how to fight sequence with Suki where he'll wear a dress o_O! lol It's weird how in one movie he's so naive in the fighting department and in Eclipse he'll be the one teaching everyone else. :) Thanks for reading!

@Paige Elizabeth I get the feeling we won't be seeing him in the Kyoshi warrior dress. It's not really a big part of the series...kind of like the episode where Sokka drinks the cactus juice. I don't think we'll be seeing the "friendly mushroom" in the next movie, as must as we want to see that. :P n_n

AW! Almost forgot about the mushroom/cactus juice! You're right although Suki IS cast in the movie, so I wonder how they will incorporate her character... :)

Well, Suki and the other warriors help save Kyoshi Island when Zuko basically destroys it. My guess is that that's going to be Suki's major role in this movie, but you never know. I love the actress playing Suki, btw. :)
